Ranks allow to you to unlock stuff. Unlockable stuff range from:
- Weapons to create your own soldier classes.
- Weapon attachments to improve your weapons (silencers, grenade launchers, etc.).
- Weapon skins (cammo pattern painted on your weapon).
- Challenges (weapon-specific objectives and specialization).
- Game modes (standard is Free-for-all and Team Deathmatch)
- Soldier skills like making your soldier have more "hit points", being more accurate in "hip fire" mode, having stronger bullets. You can only equip your solders up to 3 skills.
I don't know the exact mechanics and extent of these unlockables as I am still at a low rank and the manual does not explain anything about multiplayer.
Gameplay is pretty fast. Take note that it is not like GRAW's slow pace. Your soldier in COD4 can move pretty fast and react quickly. I would rather say that it is quite similar to Resistance with "one-hit-kill" setting turned on. Having said that, be warned that you die quickly in this game. But unlike Resistance, you do not get ammo crates lying around. But you can pick up dead peoples weapons and ammo. You cannot do "run and gun" tactics as firing from the hip greatly reduces your aim especially when you're on the move.
Despite having only a few number of players (played 5 vs. 5 last night), it doesn't seem boring as respawns are quick and happen near team mates. This gives the feel that your opponent comes in waves. This also negates the spawn camping tactic in a way. As the spawn points (team mates) is always mobile at least in Team Deathmath mode.
And my favorite feature is the Death Cam. Once you die, you will see a footage of how you died in the view of the person who killed you.
Now the things I don't like are:
- there are no vehicles;
- and the limited number of players in a single match
